My sister came home and visited from college this weekend, so we sat down and had dinner as a family. She began talking about the presidential election and the buzz around campus about voting. My family got into this intense discussion about the right to vote. The right to vote is also in some way an obligation. As a citizen of the United States of America, why wouldn't you want a say in your leader? Many choose not to vote because they don't have time to register. Some register but can't find the time to go to the polls to actually vote. And some just don't take the time to pay attention to politics at all. Statistics show that only 22% of 18-25 year olds say they actually vote. Is this a disgrace to the country, the fact that people died for us to have this right and it is taken for granted?

I know exactly what you are talking about. As a member of Student Alliance we are currently working on putting up a mock election for that reason. I don't think people understand how big of a privilage this really is. I think its so cool that we get to choose America's next leader. The sad thing is, a lot of people I talk to who can vote and don't, think that their vote wouldn't even matter. How weird is that? If everyone in America thought like that, we wouldn't have a president. A vote is a vote, it brings your favorite leader one step closer to the white house so why not?
I agree with leslie. So many people make the excuse that their vote dosent matter, well actually we have this system because every vote dose matter. Also it's ridiculous that in America where we have the privilege of elcting our own leader as apposed to having one forced on us, that such a high percentage of Americans dont vote. Not only do we not vote, but then we go into other countries to "help spread democracy" when a large portion of our population dosent take part in our own democratic process.
I agree with both Leslie and Ellery. Many people take it for granted that they have the opportunity to vote. I think that it is important as a citizen of the United States to have a say in who leads and represents your country. I know that I have been discussing this topic with my brother who is at college also. It was interesting that so many of his friends (including him) were not only deciding to vote, but also were deciding which state to vote in: their home state, or the state their school is located in. It is a shame that so many people do not choose to vote. It is a privilage that we did not have for a long period of time. Why not help share your thought in who should be the next President?
