I was telling my grandpa about how we were talking about race the other day. When i asked him what he thought defines race, he said that he sees it as physical features that you can see when you pass a person on the street. He said he grew up like Mr. Bolos where there was a different color for every person that looked a certain way. Race was important when he was growing up. He said that some of his friends' parents wouldn't let them have black people in their homes. Much less talk with them.
Immediately I said, "That's horrible! They don't even know the person! What racists."
And he replied by saying, "No, this wasn't horrible at all. To many of the people, this was normal. Blacks were inferior to whites, it wasn't as much a belief to them as it was a fact."
What do you guys think about this? What would you do if you went into a household in this day and age and the parents said that you could not bring and African American into their home? It is unheard of. This was about seven decades ago. What do you think will change in our society in six or seven decades? Do you think that racism will be abolished for good or do you think our world will be segregated as it was back then?

One time I was watching Smart Guy (the disney show like 7 years ago) in my great grandma's room. She was next to me and at one point she asked, "what is this? a show of all blacks?" I was shocked at this and kinda laughed it off, but what's important to note is that she was born in 1913, so this was weird for her to see. It's interesting how your generation also factors in to how you define race.
Yo Cpatt, power to the people! I think it is important that we take the age and generation difference into account when interacting with older people. They were brought up in a different era witht different "values." I don't consider your grandmother racist because I'm taking into account the generation difference. And for the record, your grandma was somewhat right. Smart Guy's cast is mostly African American. Though you gotta love Taj Mowry at his finest.
I think this post is interesting because my grandma is the same exact way. I think that things have changed so much over the years and I do think racism will be eliminated. I think the day we went over what exactly race was, was really important. If everybody asked themselves, what is race, then I think everybody would also realize that race is nothing.
