is it really that scary??

As we studied the film American Visions: The Wilderness & the West, i have paid specific attention to the music that is playing in each scene.  Certain light music can make the tone of the narrator's words very encouraging and glorious whereas heavy, slow, lower music can make the tone of the words very dark and upsetting.  As I thought about this during class I realized that in films, a lot of emotions are portrayed by the characters, however a great deal of emotions are portrayed through music.  The music of the film seems to make the viewers feel the way the author intended them to feel.
Look at this clip for example from the movie When A Stranger Calls, turn on the sound on your computer.

With the suspenseful music, the scene is suspenseful and scary.

Now mute the sound on your computer, and watch the clip without sound, it is much less scary without the suspenseful climactic music.

When i first watched it, I didnt even realize that the music was there because I was so wrapped up in the suspense.  What about you guys?

Lil' Cabbage, this clip was quite long so i listened to about half of it w/ sound and then listened to the 1st half without sound again. You make a good point that the music does play a significant roll in determining what a person feels. That part of the movie did have about 9 full minutes with suspenseful sound the entire time. Watching it on mute was a bit goofy i have to say because it was much harder to tell what was going on. While it was muted the clip also seemed to go faster than with the music. I think that might be because the long high and low pitched tunes seem to stretch out the process. I agree with what you said, but also that might have been the dumbest movie i have ever seen. A waste of 2 hours of my life. but good post overall.

I have to agree with gordie that the clip movie was really bad and to put it in his words goofy with out the music. There was no sound to encourage my heart to beat faster or slower. Another movie that would be absolutely pointless with out music would be the Happening, I don't want to give away the movie so I wont say to much but when the music starts to speed up and then it starts to get really slow and quite till you can't hear it at all, then people start to kill them selves. I think just the no sound and all you hear is the people killing themselves it is so much scarier than the music playing in the back round.

I totally agree. For watching the clip you provided and from my own experience I have found that it is almost comical to watch a scary movie without music. The music creates the suspense and makes you sit at the edge of your seat. I think that most people, when watching a movie, ignore the music and focus on the events occurring. Overall, without music or sound, things would not be scary. They would appear as funny, like a really bad horror movie.
